We are excited to announce Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma's Give Storm Shelter campaign! This $265,000 campaign will enable the construction of a tornado shelter at our Camp E-Ko-Wah property and two buses for safe transportation of girls. For many, one of the most cherished Girl Scout experiences is spending time at camp, building friendships and survival skills. To maintain the safety of Girl Scout campers year-round, a 50 x 24-foot multipurpose shelter accommodating up to 300 people will be built. The shelter will be FEMA F5-rated to withstand the fiercest Oklahoma tornadoes, with 8-inch thick concrete walls reinforced with steel rebar and wrapped in a wood exterior to blend in aesthetically.
This girl-inspired campaign is being spearheaded by the girls and alumnae of Norman Troop 241 and chaired by their troop leader Brenda Wheelock.
Make a Donation to Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma by mail or online. While the council will be seeking large gifts from corporations and foundations, it is important for girls, alumnae, leaders and the community -- all of whom cherish E-Ko-Wah -- to help support the campaign as well. Here are some ways you can get involved:
- Encourage others to support the Storm Shelter Campaign by contacting them in person, by email or through social media. Please encourage those close to you to make a donation through our secure online portal linked above.
- Never Underestimate the Power of Pennies. Create a Storm Shelter Campaign collection canister using a jar or coffee can to collect change at your house or from friends and neighbors. Please use this canister wrapper to promote the campaign! We ask that canister collections take place between April and August 15 as to not conflict with Cookie Sales or United Way fundraising. Change can be deposited directly into the GSWESTOK Arvest Account # 10578386 or MidFirst Account #1801003135. You may also bring change to the council office.
- Think BIG. Do you know a business, foundation or individual that would appreciate learning more about the campaign or how they can get involved? If so, please contact Chief Development Officer Crystal Slater at 405-528-4475 or email email@example.com.
- Go Over the Edge! This summer, we will partner with a nonprofit fundraising organization, Over the Edge, to raise pledges for the new storm shelter by providing individuals the opportunity to rappel over the edge of a 16-story downtown Oklahoma City office building. The professional rappelling crew will ensure a safe and successful fundraising opportunity. For more information, please visit our Over the Edge page!
