S.T.E.M.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) is one of the most popular programs now offered to Girl Scouts in Western Oklahoma.  In the 4th grade, interest in math and science is equal for girls and boys, but by the 8th grade boys are twice as interested in those same fields. Nearly 75% of tomorrow's jobs will require use of computers, but fewer than 33% of students in computer courses and related activities are girls. Through the STEM program, Girl Scouts is taking strides in reversing these trends through a variety of ways.

Upcoming STEM Activities:

Lego Mindstorms NXT:

Workshops

Designed to be a one day workshop, girls will learn to build, program, and compete with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots. The girls work in teams throughout the day to complete the missions. LEGOS are a challenging event meant to get the girls to think for themselves, work as a team, be creative, and encourage them to pursue further engineering activities. If you would like further information regarding the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robots please contact Megan Stanek at mstanek@gswestok.org.

Competition

Currently, GS-West is preparing four teams of Girl Scouts to compete in the First LEGO League Robotic Competition within the state of Oklahoma. If teams advance from the state level they will get the opportunity to compete at the regional and national level. For more information click here. This is a great way for girls to come together as a team and to develop their skills in an engineering and mathematical capacity. If this is something you are interested in, please contact Megan Stanek at mstanek@gswestok.org.

Every month Girls can check out a STEM Project that they can perform at home!
